Video Downloader App for iPhone: Do You Need One?

On this page, 7 sections

No. You can save videos on an iPhone without installing a downloader app. You do need something, though, and the something is worth choosing carefully, because this is the corner of the App Store where the free app is rarely free.

I build Grabio, a free Apple Shortcut that does this job, so you should weigh what I say about it. Below I cover what to check before you install any downloader app, and then exactly what Grabio does and where it falls short.

Get Grabio, free

A Shortcut for your iPhone share sheet. Share a link to save it, or share a file to convert it on your device. No account. The install page asks for one email and sends you the install link.

Get the free Shortcut

Four checks before you install a downloader app

These take about a minute on the App Store page and they work for any app, mine or anyone else’s.

  1. The price after the first screen. Scroll to Information, then In-App Purchases. If you see a weekly or yearly plan, the free download is a trial.
  2. The App Privacy section. It lists what the app collects and whether that is linked to you. A video downloader that wants your contacts has a reason you should ask about.
  3. What the reviews say after day 30. Sort by Most Recent. Complaints about a paywall that arrived later, or about downloads that stopped working, show up there first.
  4. What happens to the file. Some apps keep your downloads inside their own library. Check whether you can get the file into Photos or Files.

What I use instead: a Shortcut, not an app

Grabio lives in the share sheet, the same menu you use to send something to Mail or Messages. It is built on Apple’s Shortcuts app, which is already on your iPhone, so there is nothing to find in the App Store.

Here is the whole flow, as it works in the current version of the Shortcut:

  1. Open the Grabio page and tap Get the free Shortcut. Enter your email. The page sends you the install link.
  2. Open the link on your iPhone. iOS shows Add Shortcut. Tap it.
  3. In YouTube, Instagram, TikTok or Safari, tap Share, then Grabio.
  4. Grabio copies the link and shows a short note. For YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X and Pinterest it says: tap Paste, pick the quality, download.
  5. Safari opens a download page. Paste, pick a quality, download.

Opening Grabio on its own does nothing useful: it asks you to share a link or a file. The share sheet is where it starts. That is Share, then Grabio, and then the download page does its part. It is not a one-tap download, and I would rather say that than let you find out.

What Grabio does not do

  • Private posts. It works with public links. If you cannot open the post logged out, a downloader cannot either.
  • Android. It is an Apple Shortcut, so there is no Android version.
  • One-tap saving. You paste the link and pick a quality on the page that opens.
  • Every site the same way. YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X and Pinterest get the quick route. Other platforms go through a general downloader page with one extra step (extract formats, then pick one).

Where the file goes

That depends on the download page and on what Safari offers once the download finishes. If it lands in Files, where downloads go on iPhone and the iPhone Downloads folder guide show how to find it and move it into Photos.

Is it safe?

Grabio has no account and no ads of its own. The download pages it opens belong to other services, so they can change without me touching anything. Judge each page when it opens, and close it if it starts pushing you to install something.

Your link and your video do not go to Grabio’s server. The Shortcut copies the link on your phone and opens the page. The only thing it sends is a random anonymous install ID, which I use to count how many people use it.

If you add it and iOS blocks it, allow untrusted shortcuts walks through the setting. For how the link is handled, read how Grabio works.

Which should you pick

  • You download a video once a month: use the Shortcut. A subscription is poor value for that.
  • You download every day and want batch or playlist saving: an app may suit you better. Read the four checks above first.
  • You only want the audio: see downloading audio from YouTube on iPhone.

For the wider comparison of paid apps, ad-covered sites and the Shortcut, see the free video downloader for iPhone guide. For step by step on one platform, start with downloading YouTube videos on iPhone or TikTok and Instagram videos. On the legal side, is it legal to download YouTube videos covers personal use.

Video downloader app for iPhone: FAQ

Is there a video downloader app for iPhone that is really free?

I cannot vouch for apps I have not tested, so use the four checks above. Grabio itself is free with no account and no daily cap.

Do I need to install anything to use Grabio?

You add one Shortcut. There is no App Store install.

Can it save from private accounts?

No. It handles public links only.
