Baisakhi 2027: Date and the Solar New Year
On this page, 5 sections
I used to assume Baisakhi and Vishu were unrelated regional festivals that just happened to fall around the same week. They’re actually the same astronomical event, celebrated under different names in different parts of the country, which says something about how India’s solar calendar traditions diverged culturally while staying aligned astronomically.
Baisakhi 2027 date
Baisakhi 2027 falls on Wednesday, April 14, 2027. The Vaishakhi Sankranti moment, when the Sun enters Mesha (Aries), occurs at 03:33 PM that day.
A solar new year, not a lunar one
Unlike most Hindu festivals, which are fixed by the lunar calendar’s tithis, Baisakhi is a solar event: it marks Mesha Sankranti, the Sun’s entry into the sidereal zodiac sign Mesha (Aries), which begins the solar new year in several regional calendars.
This is why Baisakhi falls on essentially the same Gregorian date, April 13 or 14, every single year, unlike lunar festivals such as Diwali or Holi, which shift across the Gregorian calendar from year to year.
Same Sankranti, different names
Mesha Sankranti is celebrated across India under regional names: Baisakhi (also spelled Vaisakhi or Vaishakhi) in Punjab, Vishu in Kerala, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, and Pohela Boishakh in Bengal, among others.
Each region layers its own harvest customs and cultural identity on the same underlying solar event, which is why the specific rituals look completely different from state to state even though the astronomical trigger is identical.
The Sikh Khalsa connection
Baisakhi carries an additional layer of significance for Sikhs beyond the harvest festival: on this day in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh formally established the Khalsa Panth, the collective body of initiated Sikhs, at Anandpur Sahib.
This historical event is why Baisakhi is observed with particular importance in Punjab and at gurdwaras worldwide, with Nagar Kirtan processions and readings from the Guru Granth Sahib, on top of its role as a harvest festival marking the readiness of the rabi (spring) crop.
Harvest customs
In Punjab, Baisakhi traditionally coincides with the wheat harvest, and the day is marked with Bhangra and Giddha dance performances, fairs (melas), and family gatherings. Farmers historically viewed Baisakhi as a marker for settling accounts and beginning the new agricultural and financial year, a role the Mesha Sankranti date plays in several other regional calendars as well.

When is Baisakhi in 2027?
Baisakhi 2027 falls on Wednesday, April 14, 2027, with the Mesha Sankranti moment at 03:33 PM.
Why does Baisakhi fall on almost the same date every year?
Baisakhi marks Mesha Sankranti, a solar calendar event, rather than a lunar tithi, so it falls on April 13 or 14 nearly every year instead of shifting like lunar festivals do.
Is Vishu the same festival as Baisakhi?
Vishu and Baisakhi mark the same Mesha Sankranti moment, celebrated under different regional names and customs in Kerala and Punjab respectively.
What happened on Baisakhi in 1699?
Guru Gobind Singh formally established the Khalsa Panth, the collective body of initiated Sikhs, at Anandpur Sahib on this day.
Is Baisakhi only a Sikh festival?
No. It is primarily a harvest festival tied to Mesha Sankranti, observed broadly in Punjab, with an additional and distinct significance for Sikhs tied to the 1699 founding of the Khalsa.
