Rāhu in the 2nd House: Charts on Public Record

On this page, 7 sections

People arrive at this site looking for a list of famous people with Rāhu in the 2nd house. I know they do, because the search data says so, and because the page about the placement itself gets a steady stream of visitors who clearly wanted names attached to it.

I am going to explain what the public record actually supports, why the celebrity lists you find elsewhere are almost all unverifiable, and how to check any public chart for yourself in about ten minutes. That is a less satisfying page than a list of twenty names. It is the only version of this page I can put my name on.

What Rāhu in the 2nd house signifies

Start with the placement, since that is the part that does not depend on anyone’s birth certificate. The 2nd house carries dhana, accumulated wealth rather than earned income. It carries vāk, speech and the voice. It carries kuṭumba, the family one comes from and the family one feeds. It carries food, and the face.

Rāhu magnifies and it foreignises. Wherever Rāhu sits, the significations of that house get amplified, and they tend to arrive through channels that are unconventional, imported, or outside the family’s existing pattern. In the 2nd house that reads as an appetite around resources and voice that is larger than the household it grew up in.

Classically this shows up as wealth acquired by routes the family did not use, speech that carries further than expected, and a relationship to food and to accumulation that runs hot. The full reading of Rāhu in the 2nd house goes through the conditions that shape which of those actually surfaces, since Rāhu’s dispositor and the 2nd lord do most of the work.

Why the celebrity lists are unverifiable

Here is the mechanical problem. A house placement requires an Ascendant. An Ascendant requires a birth time accurate to a few minutes, and a birth place accurate to a city. Without both, you have a sign placement and no house at all.

Recorded birth times for public figures are rare, and the ones that circulate are frequently sourced from an interview, an astrologer’s claim, a rectification, or another website that got it from a fifth website. Trace any celebrity placement list back through its citations and you will usually arrive at an unsourced number that has been copied forward for a decade.

Western astrology has a formal answer to this problem that Vedic practice would benefit from adopting. The Rodden rating system grades birth data by source: AA for a birth certificate or an official register, A for a memory from the person or family, B for a biography or autobiography, C for uncertain data, DD for two or more conflicting claims. A placement list built on C and DD data is a list of guesses arranged alphabetically.

The four minute problem

This is the detail that decides everything and almost never gets stated. The Ascendant moves through the full zodiac in roughly twenty four hours, which averages about one degree every four minutes. A birth time wrong by twenty minutes shifts the Ascendant about five degrees. A birth time wrong by two hours shifts it roughly a whole sign.

The word roughly is doing real work there. The rate is far from uniform. Signs of long ascension can take over three hours to rise at northern latitudes while signs of short ascension clear the horizon in well under an hour, so the same twenty minute error moves the chart much further in some cases than in others.

Now apply that to a house placement. If Rāhu sits at 4 degrees of a sign and the Ascendant is at 6 degrees of the sign before it, Rāhu is in the 2nd house. Move the birth time by half an hour in one direction and the Ascendant slides past Rāhu’s sign boundary, and the same Rāhu is now in the 1st. Nothing about the sky changed. The claim changed completely.

The extra problem specific to Rāhu

Rāhu is the Moon’s ascending node, and there are two ways to compute it. The mean node moves at a uniform rate. The true node oscillates around that mean because of the Sun’s perturbation of the lunar orbit, and the two can differ by well over a degree, with the divergence reaching roughly a degree and a half at the extremes.

Most of the time that difference is irrelevant. When Rāhu is sitting within a degree or two of a sign boundary or a house cusp, it is the whole ball game. Two competent astrologers using the same verified birth data and different node settings will place Rāhu in different houses, and both will be computing correctly.

So a responsible claim about a public figure’s Rāhu house needs a rated birth time, a birth place, and a stated node convention. I have yet to see a celebrity placement list that supplies any of the three.

What a birth date alone genuinely establishes

There is something useful you can say without a birth time, and it is worth knowing exactly how far it goes. Rāhu moves retrograde through the sidereal zodiac at roughly 19.35 degrees per year, which means it spends about eighteen and a half months in each sign.

From a birth date alone you can therefore state Rāhu’s sign with confidence. What you cannot do is treat that as personal information. Everyone born in the same eighteen month window shares it. Rāhu’s sign is a generational marker in the same way an outer planet’s sign is in Western practice, and this is the sharpest correction I can offer to how these lists get read.

The house is the part that belongs to the individual, and the house is exactly the part the public record usually cannot support. That is an uncomfortable arrangement, and it is the actual situation.

How to check a public chart yourself

If you want to test a claim rather than accept one, the sequence is short.

  1. Find the birth data and its source. If the source is another astrology site, keep going backwards until you reach a document or an interview, or until the trail ends. If the trail ends, you have your answer.
  2. Note the Rodden rating if one is given, and treat anything below B as a hypothesis.
  3. Compute the chart with the birth place and a stated ayanāṁśa. Note whether Rāhu is within two degrees of a house cusp.
  4. Recompute with the birth time moved by fifteen minutes each way. If Rāhu changes house, the claim is unsupportable regardless of how confident the original source sounded.
  5. Recompute with the other node convention. If Rāhu changes house, say so rather than picking the answer you prefer.

This site does carry one placement page built around figures on record, the Ketu in the 10th house page, and the same standard applies there. Where the data does not hold up, the honest move is to say what is uncertain rather than to fill the page.

What to do with your own chart instead

The reason celebrity lists are appealing is that they promise a shortcut: see the placement in a life you recognise, and understand it faster. In practice the shortcut misleads, because a famous person’s chart contains a hundred other factors doing the visible work, and the one placement you came for is rarely the cause of the thing you noticed.

A more useful comparison is inside your own chart. Look at what else occupies or aspects your 2nd house, since Mercury there shapes the speech significations very differently from Rāhu alone. Then look at when the Rāhu mahādaśā falls in your life, because an eighteen year period arriving at twenty two and one arriving at sixty describe different biographies from the same placement.

Karma Jyotisha computes the Ascendant, the node positions under both conventions, and the house placement from the birth data you supply, and it will tell you when a graha sits close enough to a cusp that the reading depends on the minute. That flag is the most honest output a chart engine can produce.

Which famous people have Rāhu in the 2nd house?

Publishing a list would require birth times rated at least B on the Rodden scale for each person, and most circulating celebrity birth times do not meet that bar. Since a house placement collapses without an accurate birth time, this site does not publish attributions it cannot compute from verified data.

Can you find someone’s Rāhu house from their birth date?

No. A birth date establishes Rāhu’s sign, since Rāhu spends about eighteen and a half months in each sign. The house requires an Ascendant, which requires an accurate birth time and place. Sign without house is a generational fact shared by everyone born in that window.

How much does a wrong birth time move a chart?

The Ascendant advances roughly one degree every four minutes on average, so a twenty minute error shifts it about five degrees and a two hour error shifts it roughly a whole sign. The rate varies considerably with latitude and with which sign is rising, so the effect of a given error is not uniform.

What is the difference between mean and true Rāhu?

The mean node moves at a uniform rate while the true node oscillates around it because of solar perturbation of the lunar orbit. The two can differ by more than a degree. When Rāhu sits near a sign boundary or a house cusp, the convention chosen can change which house it falls in.

What does Rāhu in the 2nd house mean?

The 2nd house carries accumulated wealth, speech, family of origin and food. Rāhu amplifies those significations and tends to route them through unconventional or foreign channels, so the appetite around resources and voice often outgrows the household it started in. The specific expression depends heavily on Rāhu’s dispositor and the 2nd lord.

Why do astrology sites disagree about a celebrity’s chart?

Usually because they are using different birth times of unknown provenance, and sometimes because they use different node conventions or a different ayanāṁśa. Two correct calculations from two different inputs produce two different charts, and neither computation is at fault.
