Hariyali Teej 2027: Date and Sawan Shukla Tritiya
On this page, 5 sections
A friend’s mother-in-law once sent over a plastic tub of ghewar and green bangles two days before I even knew Teej season had started. That tub is called Sindhara, and once you know it exists, half of Hariyali Teej’s customs stop looking random and start looking like a fairly organized system of gift-giving between a married woman’s parents and her in-laws.
Hariyali Teej 2027 date
Hariyali Teej 2027 falls on Wednesday, August 4, 2027. Tritiya Tithi begins at 08:19 AM on August 4 and runs until 05:08 AM the next morning, so by Delhi’s panchang the puja and swing-singing fall entirely within the daylight hours of August 4 itself, with no ambiguity about which day to observe.
What Hariyali Teej celebrates
Hariyali Teej falls on Shukla Paksha Tritiya of the Shravana (Sawan) month, usually about two days before Nag Panchami. The festival marks the reunion of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, and on this day married women pray to Parvati for conjugal bliss and a happy married life.
It sits inside Sawan, the month considered most auspicious for Shiva worship, which is part of why this particular Teej carries extra weight compared to some of the other tithi-based observances through the year.
Sindhara, swings and the day’s customs
On Hariyali Teej, married women traditionally visit their parents’ home, wear new clothes (preferably a green sari) and green bangles, and set up swings to use in pairs while singing Teej songs. The name itself, Hariyali, means “greenery” and reflects the monsoon timing of the festival as much as the dress code.
The Sindhara is a gift bucket sent by a married woman’s parents to her and her in-laws around this time, typically containing homemade sweets, Ghewar, henna, bangles and similar items. This custom of gifting Sindhara is common enough that Hariyali Teej is also known regionally as Sindhara Teej, alongside its other names, Chhoti Teej and Shravana Teej.
The three Teej of Sawan and Bhadrapada
Hariyali Teej is the first of three related Teej festivals celebrated by women in North Indian states, especially Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand, during the Sawan and Bhadrapada months.
Kajari Teej, also called Badi Teej, follows fifteen days later, and Hartalika Teej, observed on Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Bhadrapada, comes roughly a month after Hariyali Teej, usually just a day before Ganesh Chaturthi. Other Tritiya-tithi festivals like Akshaya Tritiya and Gangaur Tritiya are sometimes lumped in with these three by name alone, but they are not considered part of this specific trio.
Where Hariyali Teej sits inside Sawan 2027
Hariyali Teej falls well inside the Sawan 2027 window, which runs from July 19 to August 17 that year. It lands after the second Sawan Somvar and roughly a week and a half before Raksha Bandhan closes out the month on the Shravan Purnima.
