Instagram Downloader Shortcut for iPhone
On this page, 5 sections
Instagram will let you like a post, comment on it, share it to a story and send it in a DM. Saving the thing to your own Photos library is the part it handles unevenly. For Reels it added its own download option in 2023, with limits.
For photos, carousels and profile pictures I have no source for an equivalent. That gap is why “Instagram downloader shortcut” is a search people run, and Instagram content isn’t one uniform thing.
What Instagram gives you on its own
The bookmark icon under a post adds it to a private collection inside Instagram. That’s not a file in your Photos library.
It stays inside the app, tied to your account, and it is gone if the original post is deleted or the account goes private. If you want the media itself, to keep, to repost elsewhere or to send to someone without Instagram, the bookmark does nothing.
Reels are the exception. On 22 Nov 2023 TechCrunch reported that Instagram head Adam Mosseri said all users worldwide can download public Reels: tap the share button and pick the download option.
Three details from that report matter. The clip is saved with an Instagram watermark carrying the account name. A Reel that uses a licensed audio clip downloads without audio. And an account can turn downloads off under Settings, Privacy, Reels and Remix.
That report is three years old, so check the share menu in your own app before you assume it still works the same way. For a profile picture, tapping it shows it larger, and I have not found a save option there.
| Instagram content | What Instagram itself offers | What Grabio does with the link |
|---|---|---|
| Public Reel | A Download option under the share button, since Nov 2023. The saved clip carries an Instagram watermark with the account name. A Reel that uses licensed audio saves without sound. Creators can switch downloads off. | Copies the link and opens the download page. You tap Paste and pick a quality. |
| Photo post | The Save bookmark, which files it in a private collection inside Instagram. | Same route. What the page offers for a photo depends on the page. |
| Carousel | The Save bookmark. | Same route. I have not tested carousels end to end, so check the page before you rely on it. |
| Profile picture | Tap it to see it larger. I have not found a save option. | Same route. Not tested. |
What a downloader actually needs to handle
“Instagram downloader” sounds like one job, but it’s really four different content types with different structures:
- Single photo posts. The simplest case, a single image tied to a post URL.
- Carousels. Posts with multiple photos or videos swiped through in sequence, which means a downloader has to detect all of them rather than grabbing just the first slide.
- Reels. Short-form video, typically with audio, and different again from a standard video post in how Instagram serves it.
- Profile pictures. Not tied to a specific post at all, and needing to be pulled from the profile itself rather than a shared link.
A shortcut that only handles single photos and calls itself an Instagram downloader is going to disappoint the first time someone throws a carousel or a Reel link at it.
Grabio covers this on iPhone
Grabio is the free Shortcut I built. Instagram is one of six platforms it recognises, along with YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, X and Pinterest. Share the Instagram link to Grabio and it copies the link and opens a download page. There you tap Paste and pick a quality. Grabio has no account, no login and no ads of its own, and it costs nothing.
Be clear about the limit of that. Grabio hands your link to the download page. What the page can fetch for a given post, a Reel, a photo or a carousel, is the page’s job, and I have only listed what I can stand behind in the table above. These guides go deeper on each type:
- Downloading Instagram photos on iPhone for single-image posts.
- Saving an Instagram video to your camera roll for standard video posts.
- Downloading an Instagram carousel on iPhone for multi-slide posts.
- Saving an IG Reel to your camera roll for Reels.
Get it from the install page. It adds to Apple’s Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
A word on private accounts and permission
None of this gets around Instagram’s own privacy controls. If a post is on a private account you don’t follow, you can’t see it in the Instagram app either, and no shortcut changes that.
What this covers is content you already have legitimate access to view: your own posts, public accounts, or accounts that have accepted your follow request. The point is getting a copy onto your device instead of leaving it stuck inside Instagram’s app.
Frequently asked questions
Can I save an Instagram post directly through the app?
Public Reels, yes: since November 2023 the share button offers a download option, with a watermark, no sound on licensed audio, and an off switch for creators. Photos and carousels only go into a private in-app bookmark collection, which isn’t a file and disappears if the original post is deleted or the account goes private.
Does an Instagram downloader work on carousels with multiple photos?
A useful one has to. Grabio passes the carousel link to the download page, and what that page offers for a multi-slide post depends on the page. I have not tested carousels end to end, so look at the options it shows before you count on getting every slide.
How do I save an Instagram profile picture?
Tapping a profile picture shows it larger, and I have not found a save option in the app. Grabio is built around post links, and I have not tested profile pictures, so I will not promise it.
Do I need to log into Instagram to use Grabio?
No. Grabio doesn’t require a login or account for any of its features, including Instagram downloads.
Can I download a private Instagram account’s posts if I don’t follow them?
No. This only works for content you can already legitimately view, whether that’s your own posts, public accounts, or accounts you follow. It doesn’t bypass Instagram’s privacy settings.
