Kali Puja 2027: Date and Why Bengal Worships the Goddess on Amavasya
On this page, 3 sections
A colleague from Kolkata once explained that while most of India lights lamps for Lakshmi on Diwali night, Bengal turns to Kali, worshipped at midnight on the same dark new moon.
The 2027 date
Kali Puja 2027 falls on Thursday, October 28, coinciding with Diwali, on the Amavasya (new moon) of the Kartika month.
Why the same night as Diwali
Kali Puja and Diwali fall on the same Amavasya tithi because both are new-moon festivals of the Kartika month; the difference is regional, with Bengal, Odisha, and Assam worshipping Kali while much of the rest of India worships Lakshmi.
How it is observed
Kali Puja involves midnight worship, elaborate clay idols, animal or symbolic offerings in some traditions, and immersion of the idol the following day, distinct in tone from the Lakshmi-focused celebrations elsewhere.
