Rath Yatra 2027: Date and the Journey of Lord Jagannath
On this page, 3 sections
A Puri local once described Rath Yatra as the one day of the year the deity leaves the temple to be seen by everyone, not just those who can enter it, which is part of why the crowds are so large.
The 2027 date
Rath Yatra 2027 falls on Monday, July 5, marking the annual chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple in Puri to the Gundicha Temple.
What the festival involves
Three massive wooden chariots are built fresh each year and pulled by thousands of devotees through the streets of Puri. The deities stay at the Gundicha Temple for about a week before returning in the Bahuda Yatra, the return journey.
Why the date is lunar
Rath Yatra falls on Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya, the second day of the bright fortnight of the Ashadha month, a lunar date, which is why it shifts against the Gregorian calendar each year.
This site does not sell pilgrimage packages or rituals. The date above is checked against the Panchang.
