Vat Savitri 2027: Date and the Two Regional Traditions
On this page, 5 sections
A colleague from Delhi and one from Pune once argued, entirely good-naturedly, about which date Vat Savitri actually fell on that year. Neither was wrong. They were just describing two different, equally valid calendar traditions separated by about two weeks.
Vat Savitri 2027 dates
There are two separate observances in 2027, following two different regional calendar systems:
- Vat Savitri Amavasya (North Indian, Purnimanta tradition): Friday, June 4, 2027. Amavasya Tithi begins 04:05 AM on June 4 and ends 01:09 AM on June 5. This date also coincides with Shani Jayanti.
- Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat (Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India, Amanta tradition): Friday, June 18, 2027, observed on the Purnima exactly two weeks later.
Why there are two dates, not just two names
Most Amanta-versus-Purnimanta festival date differences are cosmetic, the same tithi is simply labeled differently depending on whether a region’s lunar month ends at the new moon (Amanta, used in the south and west) or the full moon (Purnimanta, used in the north). Vat Savitri is an exception.
North Indian tradition ties the vrat to the Amavasya (new moon) of Jyeshtha month, while Maharashtra, Gujarat and much of South India tie it to the following Purnima (full moon), roughly fifteen days later. This is a genuine gap in which day is considered correct, not just a naming difference, which is why the two traditions land two weeks apart rather than on the same day.
The legend of Savitri and Satyavan
The vrat commemorates Savitri, who married Satyavan despite being warned he was destined to die within a year. When Yama, the god of death, came to take Satyavan’s soul, Savitri followed him, engaging him in a long conversation about dharma so impressive that Yama granted her a series of boons, careful never to ask for Satyavan’s life directly until her final wish tricked Yama into returning it.
The vrat is observed by married women praying for their husband’s long life, directly modeled on Savitri’s devotion and cleverness.
Why the ritual centers on a banyan tree
“Vat” refers to the banyan (Vat Vriksha) tree, under which the legend places Savitri’s confrontation with Yama. Married women observing the vrat tie a sacred thread around a banyan tree, circumambulate it, and often read or listen to the Savitri-Satyavan katha as part of the day’s rituals.
The Shani Jayanti overlap
Because Vat Savitri Amavasya falls on the Amavasya of Jyeshtha month, it coincides with Shani Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Shani (Saturn), in years following the North Indian dating. This makes the North Indian June 4, 2027 date a day of overlapping observances for households that follow both traditions.

When is Vat Savitri in 2027?
Vat Savitri Amavasya (North India) falls on Friday, June 4, 2027. Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat (Maharashtra, Gujarat, South India) falls two weeks later on Friday, June 18, 2027.
Why do North and South India observe Vat Savitri on different dates?
North India ties the vrat to the Amavasya of Jyeshtha month while Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India tie it to the following Purnima, a genuine fifteen-day difference rather than a naming variation.
What is the story behind Vat Savitri?
Savitri followed Yama, the god of death, after he took her husband Satyavan’s soul, and through clever conversation and boon requests, tricked Yama into restoring Satyavan’s life.
Why is a banyan tree used in the ritual?
The legend places Savitri’s encounter with Yama under a banyan (Vat) tree, so married women tie a thread around and circumambulate a banyan tree as part of the vrat.
Does Vat Savitri 2027 coincide with any other observance?
The North Indian Vat Savitri Amavasya date, June 4, 2027, coincides with Shani Jayanti since both fall on the Amavasya of Jyeshtha month.
