Hartalika Teej 2027: Date and Puja Muhurat

On this page, 5 sections

I once asked why a fast named after an “abduction” is one of the most popular vrats for married women in North India. The answer turned out to be a legend about a friend who kidnapped a bride-to-be to save her from a marriage she didn’t want, which is a very different story than the name suggests on first hearing it.

Hartalika Teej 2027 date

Hartalika Teej 2027 falls on Friday, September 3, 2027. The Pratahkala (morning) puja muhurat runs from 06:00 AM to 08:32 AM, a window of about two and a half hours. Tritiya Tithi begins at 04:49 PM on September 2 and ends at 02:18 PM on September 3, so the puja is timed to the morning hours of the 3rd while the tithi is still active.

The legend behind the name

“Hartalika” comes from two words: Harat, meaning abduction, and Aalika, meaning female friend. The story goes that Goddess Parvati’s father had arranged her marriage to Vishnu, but Parvati was devoted to Shiva and wished to marry him instead.

Her friend, the Aalika, took her away into a forest before the wedding could happen, where Parvati performed intense penance to win Shiva as her husband. The vrat commemorates this act of devotion and the friend’s role in enabling it, which is where the festival gets its name.

How the day is observed

Married women, and unmarried women hoping for a good match, observe a strict fast on this day, often without food or water, and worship sand or clay idols of Shiva and Parvati made specially for the occasion.

The fast is dedicated to marital happiness and the well-being of one’s husband, mirroring the devotion Parvati herself is believed to have shown. It is counted, along with Karva Chauth, among the more rigorous vrats kept by married women through the year.

Gowri Habba in the south

The same tithi is observed under a different name in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where it is called Gowri Habba or Swarna Gowri Vratha. The core idea, honoring Parvati (Gowri) for marital blessings, is the same, though the specific rituals and offerings follow regional custom rather than the North Indian Hartalika format.

Where it sits in the Teej and festival calendar

Hartalika Teej falls about a month after Hariyali Teej 2027, the first of the Sawan-Bhadrapada Teej trio, and it typically lands just a day before Ganesh Chaturthi, making early September a dense stretch of the festival calendar in North India.
